TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 9th, 2008

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 10th, 2008

  • 7 POD’s packed full to not only entertain, but to educate.
  • Free time to visit other displays in the Agriplex
  • Reining at Lunch: Instead of just sitting in the stands during your lunch, you will be able to experience some true horse power. Reining began on the working cattle ranches, where cowboys used their horses to gather, move and hold cattle on the open range. Today's reining competitions provide a venue for riders to demonstrate the skills of their highly trained and hard working horses. They are judged on a variety of moves which include: circles, lead changes, spins, sliding stops, rollback and backup.

OPEN TO:

  • Grades 3, 4, 5 & 6
  • Thames Valley and Catholic School Boards in the Middlesex area

A Day in the Life of a Settler : In the 19th century, the work performed by children was crucial to the operation of the farm. Once the field work was done, there was still work to be done at home. At this POD, students will gain an understanding of agricultural chores such as butter churning, wool spinning and the laundry board.

Dairy: Students will have an opportunity to recognize milk's role in healthy living by analyzing essential nutrients found in milk and their functions in maintaining a healthy body.  They will also learn how milk is processed into dairy and dairy products for consumers and finish with a milking demonstration.

Country Corral An array of sheep pigs, and cows all brought together in one ring is sure to not only entertain but teach everyone how valuable animals are in our everyday lives.  From food, to clothing to nutrition, their importance will be brought to life, like only Cowboy Fred can do.

Eggs & Chickens : At this POD you will not only learn how eggs are graded and produced locally but you will learn the difference between chickens & hens and why they play an important part in your daily routine.

Little Ray's: His educational presentation is always a hit and this year's promises to be exceptional. Come and learn about the giant lizards from around the world including cousins of the infamous Komodo dragons'.

Miniature Horses:  Miniature horses were originally very important in the mining industry used for pulling the coal carts out of the mines; they were perfect for the job due to their size and strength. Today they are a novelty to have just as pets. They are easy to care for and quite willing to do whatever is asked of them and are a joy to have around. At this POD, you will come nose to nose with these amazing horses.

Canadian Raptor Conservancy The Canadian Raptor Conservancy performs live, Free-Flight Demonstrations that combines education with entertainment to teach students about raptors and their important role in nature.  Each demonstration includes an educational commentary that addresses each individual species and how they fit into their natural world. We will cover such topics as: the food chain, distribution, habitat, adaptations, hunting style and historical significance.
